First Day Hike
Please join us and ring in a healthy 2025! We will lead various hikes suitable for all ages and abilities. Meet at the Backshore Trailhead and choose your route. Warm beverages, water and snacks will be on hand from start to finish. It may not need saying but dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. Pets on a leash welcome.
Take It Outside
The Maine State Trailer will be on site. For the adventurous, try cross country skiing, snowshoeing or skating on Fresh Pond. Of course, all weather dependent. Or just gather around the fire and meet with friends, new and old. There will be an array of offerings to warm you up: cocoa, coffee and home-made soups. Sweets and much more!

Bobby Cleveland in Concert with Ron Corl
Enjoy an engaging musical hour played on tenor saxophone, wind synthesizer, and drums. Expect patriotic Americana, jazz, Latin standards, rock favorites and classical selections.
Location: Meet at the end of Indian Bar Road. The concert will be on the lawn.

Music in the Sanctuary
Spend a summer evening in the Sanctuary with the Stillwater Serenaders, a bluegrass quintet from Old Town, with members from Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts and Texas. We’ll hear jam bluegrass, original pieces, Irish jigs and reels, and American folk standards. The Stillwater Serenaders are committed to preserving authentic sounds while respectfully exploring creative bounds. This will be a musical adventure!
The Importance of Seaweed
Please welcome Susan Hand Shetterly, author of Seaweed Chronicles, Notes on the Landscape of Home and other titles, and Jessica Muhlin, Professor of Marine Biology and chair, Corning School of Ocean Studies, Maine Maritime Academy, for an in-depth discussion on the vital roles of seaweed followed by a visit to the shoreline. Meet at the end of Indian Bar Road.
Interactive Touch Tank
Join former Holbrook assistant ranger Kiera Luu and her partners at the University of Maine Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research as they lead you on an intertidal exploration of our beach. They will have an interactive touch tank on site to interpret the living creatures we encounter. This program is suitable for all ages! We will gather at the end of Indian Bar Road. Friends of Holbrook Welcome Day
Join the Friends of Holbrook Island Sanctuary to talk about what we do and what we hope to accomplish this season. A barbeque lunch will be on the grill, hot dogs and much more…Music will follow with Bobby Cleveland and Ron Corl. Gather at the parking lot at the end of Indian Bar Road.

Edible & Medicinal Plant Walk
Join Maine forager and author Tom Seymour as he leads a walk along groomed trails in search of early wild edibles. Tom will identify common forest, meadow, and seaside plants that have medicinal or nutritional value.
Water is provided. The walking session will last approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours and cover a total distance of ¾ mile. Wear sturdy shoes.

Take it Outside! 2023
The Maine State Park’s ski and snowshoe trailer will be located on Indian Bar Road and available for use in the Park February 3rd - 13th between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm. Free gear will be on hand daily including snowshoes, sleds, tubes, ice skates and ski packages. Our official TIO day is February 11th and refreshments will be provided! Please call ahead about availability, trail conditions, or other questions.
First Day Hike
Join us for a leisurely 1.5 mile walk for all ages (leashed pets welcome) and start the year hiking in the coastal woods, a great way to ring in 2023! We will meet at the Backshore Trail parking area and walk easy trails toward Goose Falls village with the option of hiking the shoreline trail that provides wonderful views of Islesboro and beyond (conditions permitting). We will pause at Goose Falls bridge and the historic renovated John & Christina Bakeman Cemetery, before returning via Back Road to the trailhead. Meet & Greet at 1:00pm: Warm beverages, water, and snacks will be on hand at the start and finish of our walk. The guided hike will begin at 1:30. Please wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. Free program and entry.
Inter-Tidal Exploration Lab - Searsport
Join Holbrook Summer assistant park managers Jack Fontaine and Ariana Edwards as they lead you in exploring a very different shoreline -- the waters of the upper Penobscot Bay -- with very different creatures and features. This hour-long hands-on experience, followed by a Q & A, is suitable for all ages. Meet at the top of the main beach stairway along the shoreline parking lot of Moose Point State Park.

Build a Bird House!
Want to make a birdhouse and learn about Hancock County’s Bluebird Trail? Join us for a fun event at the Blue Hill Heritage Trust office Friday, May 20th at 3:30pm. Holbrook Island Sanctuary Park Manager Charlie Cannon will help your kids build a birdhouse to bring home. Sue from Downeast Audubon will share stories about the bird blue trail and how you can help create habitat for our avian friends. There will also be a giant birdhouse for kids to play in! This event is free but we do ask you to preregister as we have a limited number of bird house kits. Email landere@bluehillheritagetrust.org.
